To encourage the use of reusable checkout bags for the benefit of our town's environment and citizens.

Plastic bags pose a threat to the Long Island Sound, wildlife, natural areas, and health of the Guilford community.  It is our goal to inspire citizens to replace single-use plastic checkout bags with reusable bags to decrease our town's plastic waste.

There is no such thing as ‘away’. When we throw anything away, it must go somewhere.
— Annie Leonard, Executive Director, Greenpeace USA

Our goals

  • Step one: Increase the use and distribution of reusable bags.

  • Step two: Pass an ordinance prohibiting single-use plastic checkout bags.

  • Step three: Place a small fee on paper bags in order to create an incentive to bring reusable bags.
